Sermon: The trinity

Bruce Ware
gave this sermon a couple of years ago focusing on the trinity.  It is a great sermon that explores the similarities and differences between the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

It is quite likely that you've never heard solid teaching on the trinity and so this could be useful.

For me I quite liked how Bruce drew a comparison between the Husband/Wife relationship and how this is like the relationship between the Father and the Son.

Bruce also takes questions during the session and he gets some good ones.  There is lots in this sermon, so you might even like to listen twice.

Sermon: Business as a calling

I found this sermon useful in terms of helping me think through how I regard my work.  In this talk, Nelson Cooney makes a number of very good points that I've also been considering over the last few months.

1) Not everyone is called to be a pastor

2) A pastors life is not necessarily idyllic or exemplary

3) Work is God given and we need to come to a biblical Christ honouring way of thinking about it.

4) The cross must be at the center of how we consider our job

If you are not a pastor, and not called to be a pastor, you should give this a listen.  Again, I don't necessarily agree with everything said (there are some good reasons not to start your own business for instance) but this is good solid stuff.

SoW: The Importance of a local church

You may have noticed that I've started abbreviating the sermon of the week to SoW.  This simply saves time, and if you subscribe to this blog a quick look in the "brain food" category will tell you instantly what this is about.

This sermon is an older one by Mark Dever from the 2002 New Attitude conference.

What I liked about this church is that it gives you a great basic understanding of what the church is, why it is important and why you and I should belong to it.

He gives reasons why we should join a local church (in no particular order):

  1. Because it is good for the church
  2. Because it is good for the world
  3. Because it is good for you

Sermon of the week: Discerning the will of God

This John Piper sermon from his series in Romans was very useful.  He deals with some weighty matters in it that are fundamental to our understanding of who God is and how we are to live for him, understand the world around us and understand how we should interact with God in this world.

The first of these two weighty issues he tackles is the will of God.  This he helpfully divides it into two areas which we can see and read clearly from scripture.  I expect that this sermon would be useful for people who struggle to understand how God can be both sovereign and yet understand how sin can be both part of this world and yet leave God sinless.

The other weighty matter he deals with (although briefly) is the matter of the word of God being final and decisive word of God.

This is a critical issue because it deals fully with the question of whether God still speaks to us.  It causes us to question why is such necessary and John does a great job of explaining not just that is not necessary, but that this is indeed the point of Romans 12:2:

“Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.”

Sermon of the week: Sustaining the soul

This is the last talk from T4G08 and one which I found challenging.  Like many conference sermons it is aimed at pastors, but the lesson is valid for everyone – and I found it very useful and challenging.

C. J. Mahaney is extremely practical about the relationship between joy, gratefulness, complaining, godly affection and the gospel.  He also talked about the importance of faith and how it works in us as we minister to others.  One of the key things that encouraged me is when he pointed out that while we may not have the ability to preach or minister as the great preachers of today, these great preachers cannot preach a better gospel.

The gospel is consistent and does not change between us (even if we think it does), and the great thing is that when we preach the gospel we know that it will do what it is intended to do.  As John Piper pointed out in last weeks sermon of the week – we cannot expect to always see people changed by what we say, most of the time we are another spoke in the wheel, but in many cases this is exactly what the gospel is often intended to be – another witness to that person of the grace of God.

Sermon of the Week: I’m sending you to open their eyes

In this sermon from April is the final sermon from John Pipers excellent series on the new birth.  In this sermon he talks about the role that each believer in Christ has for reaching those without Christ.

He gives practical wisdom and encouragement that I found particularly useful in terms of setting my attitude toward evangelism correctly.

If evangelism is something you struggle with – this sermon will be useful to you.

Sermon of the week: Humanism and the glory of God

I loved this sermon.  It is one of those sermons that makes the heart rejoice.  It is a hard message though, and not everyone who hears it will like it – in fact most will find it repulsive because it exalts Christ to the utter exclusion of man.

This is an old sermon by Paris Reidhead (who I'd never heard of before) but which I came across in a blog post recently (can't remember where).

The recording is not good, but its clear enough to hear.  Paris is a passionate preacher – particularly on this subject.

If the problem of humanism was rife in his day (I suspect is was within 20 years of WW2), it is even worse today.  This comes as a breath of fresh air after the stupidity of the conservative "gospel" preaching that goes on today.

Listen to this – and love Jesus Christ the more because of it.

Sermon of the week – The Holiness of God

If you’ve never heard R. C. Sproul on the Holiness of God, then you really need to hear this – it is classic R.C.

In this sermon R. C. takes us through Isaiah 6 – one of the great passages in the old testament.  This is a simple, but deep, profound and powerful account of the calling of Isaiah to his prophetic ministry all those centuries ago.

R. C. has a solid grasp on the passage and does an excellent job of illuminating the greatness of the God who calls ordinary men to pursue Him and His magnify His glory regardless of personal cost.

Thoroughly recommended!

Sermon of the week: Race, ethnicity and Christ

This sermon is good – its not something you hear about much (if ever) but it is a fascinating and very useful take on race, ethnicity and Christ.

In today's world where we are increasingly multi-cultural, this is increasingly relevant.

Sermon of the week: Church on Mission

Matt Chandler started his pastoral ministry as a reluctant pastor.  His primary passion is not new churches, but churches on mission.  In this sermon he explains what this means – what are the marks of a church on mission?

Even if you are not in church leadership – you will know that a missional church is made up of individuals who are mission minded – in that sense this message is a challenge to us all to get real about Christ and sharing the gospel – however, not in the usual guilt trip way.

This sermon is a plea from someone passionate about Christ, calling us to live for Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit to the Glory of Christ.

This is another sermon from the Text and Context conference held in February.  Therefore, you can watch it onlinedownload the video, or audio.  To listen now, click the control below.
