Humility

March 6, 2013 | 0 Comments

One of the lessons the Lord has been teaching me over the last few years is humility, for which I’m grateful. Last weekend in our adult Sunday School class I had the opportunity to teach on one of the main passages that I have been dwelling on.   We covered 1 Peter 5:1–7 but particularly focused [...]

Sermon: Genesis 16

I had the privilege of preaching twice in New Zealand recently during our Christmas break and thought I’d share one of those sermons here.  I preached the same sermon both times.  This is the longer of the two from Riverbend Bible Church in Hastings. This sermon was originally preached in August at Placerita Baptist Church (our [...]

Sermon: 1 John 1:8-10

It is a scary thing preaching at Placerita Baptist Church.  And I have so much to learn. Here is my first sermon at PBC, on 1 John 1:8-10.  This is a great text to preach from, and there is so much in verse 5-10. 2012-06-10.mp3

A few weeks ago (quite a few weeks ago – its been busy) I had the opportunity to teach in our Bereans Sunday School class at Placerita Baptist Church.  We are working through a series on Discipleship when our main teacher, Dr Barrick, is away.  This is my  contribution to that series. The text for [...]

Sermon: James 2 – Justification by works and saving faith

August 30, 2011 | 0 Comments

I’ve been doing a homiletics class over the last seven or eight weeks. I’ve preached twice during it and have received valueable feedback both times. I’m grateful for the opportunity to hone my speaking ability and how I handle the word of God. While the first sermon wasn’t worth putting up here, the second one [...]

Sermon: Baptism

June 19, 2011 | 0 Comments

A few weeks ago, I was able to preach on the subject of baptism to the fine folk at Heretaunga Christian Center. This sermon focuses on the transformation that comes from being regenerated and how that is reflected in baptism. I also worked through some of the differences between infant baptism and believers baptism specifically [...]

Sermon: Psalm 16

January 27, 2011 | 0 Comments

On Sunday I preached on Psalm 16 at Heretaunga Christian Center (and then again at Moera Gospel Chapel). This Psalm is Messianic – that is it describes Jesus Christ.  In this case it provides insight into the spiritual life of both David and Jesus Himself that gives us insight into the commitment these men had [...]

Colossians 1 – the transforming gospel

May 24, 2010 | 0 Comments

Yesterday I spoke on Colossians 1:3-8. This passage focuses on Pauls thanksgiving for the Colossians who he’d never seen and on the reason he gave thanks for them. His reasoning was based on the hope that they had in Christ which had given them a love for all the saints.  This hope had come through [...]

Our need to see our sin

April 18, 2010 | 0 Comments

In my last post I mentioned that we need to have a greater understanding of our own sin and depravity. Its only when we see this that we will see our need for salvation, but it also will illuminate the depth of Gods grace and may lead us to a deeper worship of God.

John 16

A couple of months ago, I got to speak on John 16 in our congregation.  While it is possible to preach on the whole chapter, I generally prefer to select a smaller selection from the chapter and preach on that.

Psalm 32

A few months ago, I began memorizing scripture – I started with Psalm 32.  Today, I had the opportunity to take what I’ve learned from memorizing and meditating on this Psalm and share it in a sermon.

David, Bathsheba and adultery

April 20, 2009 | 2 Comments

The story of David and Bathsheba is well known, but not known well enough.  We will often read it and not really check our own hearts as we ought and so we dont always take out everything that we can.

Leadership starts with you

January 24, 2009 | 2 Comments

Last weekend I spoke on leadership. The main point that I wanted everyone to understand was that while we might not all be called to leadership positions at work, church or even home, we are all called to display the characteristics of leadership.

Jesus Christ – the God man

December 7, 2008 | 0 Comments

Yesterday, I spoke in our series on Christ on the topic of Christ the man. I began by exploring things that demonstrated that Jesus is human (which I think should be reasonably clear upon a straight forward reading of the gospels).  We also looked at some of the points that demonstrated the deity of Jesus.  [...]

Last sunday I had the privilege of speaking from Psalm 119:1-24.  Psalm 119 is an interesting Psalm to study as it is an acrostic in Hebrew – split into 22 sections of eight verses each, with each of the eight verses in each section starting with the same hebrew letter of the alphabet.
